Subspecies, varieties, forms and cultivars of plants belonging to the Cleistocactus hyalacanthus group

  • Cleistocactus hyalacanthus (K.Schum.) Rol.-Goss.: Produces thin upright stems up to 1 m tall, 5-6,5 cm in diameter, 15 to 25 ribs, 3 or 4 central spines, 20 to 30 radials
  • Cleistocactus jujuyensis (Backeb.) Backeb.: ( = Cleistocactus hyalacanthus ) Produces slender, greyish-green, freely branching stems up to 1 m long or sometimes longer. The aeroles produce many thin radial spines and four yellow-brown central spines. The thin flowers (up to 4 cm long) are red in colour.
  • Cleistocactus jujuyensis f. monstruosus cristatus hort.: This is a strange and unmistakable crest. Areoles connect one to each other forming characteristic horizontal lines.
  • Cleistocactus jujuyensis f. monstruosus hort.: Produces strange asymmetrically tuberculate stems that grow in tall columns or twist and wind around each other like snakes. The areoles are irregular sometime fused to form horizontal lines. The spines are fine bristly and usually very scarce.
