Subspecies, varieties, forms and cultivars of plants belonging to the Melocactus azureus group

Melocactus azureus Buining & Bredero: (subsp. azureus) has striking glaucous blue stems, especially when young. Cephalia with brown tufts of wool and reddish bristles usually not protruding. Distribution: Northern central Bahia.
Melocactus azureus f. cristatus hort.: Crested form. Has a very nice glaucous colouring.
Melocactus azureus subs. ferreophilus (Buining & Bredero) N.P.Taylor: has stems green (never glaucous). Cephalia with white wool and bristles well exserted. Distribution: central Bahia.
